Popular Places The Gateway of India was constructed on 1920 in memory of King George V and Queen Mary who visited the city. This is the most famous monument, which symbolizes the British Raj period. Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat

This place became popular because it shows tradition and culture at its very essence. The Malaxmi Dhobi Ghat features an open laundry wherein dirty clothes from the whole of Mumbai are taken to this place and here they are being handwashed by the washermen called dhobis through rows of troughs made of concrete material. This kind of profession has been a tradition that has been handed down from one generation to another. Dhobis’ strength and diligence make them stand on their knees for a couple of hours everyday. Truly, this is a tradition that you must never miss when visiting the city.

Haji Ali

Haj Ali was built in 1431 by a very influential businessman and saint Haji Ali. It is a mosque for preaching and a tomb as well. The struture is located in the middle of the ocean abd is accessible only when the tidenis low. Pilgrims visit the place especially during Tursdays and Fridays because it is said that here is where the dead saints give their blessings. Across the other side of the road, there is a place where one can go shopping first while waiting for the tide to subside.
